110 Million people in the United States will report musculoskeletal pain to their doctor THIS YEAR...
That’s 9 Million people per month…
and 300,000 people PER DAY reporting musculoskeletal pain!
The beauty of this number is that, as a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist, I happen to be an expert in this area. :)
However, only 9 Million people in the United States will take advantage of Physical Therapy services this year to address their musculoskeletal pain. Unfortunately for all of us, that’s only 8%.
This means that there is a huge untapped market of people who could benefit from Physical Therapy. So, why aren’t the other 92% seeking out musculoskeletal experts when they have access to us? Perhaps no one tells them that PT is an option. That’s possible. Physical Therapy is a relatively young profession, and still not all medical professionals are even aware of the skill-set that we have to offer….the ability to assess complex musculoskeletal pain and determine why the tissue has become painful, then coordinate a treatment plan that would help to alleviate the pain and improve the person’s ability to function and do the things they want to do. I’d certainly give it a shot if someone presented it to me like that!
I think we need to do a better job of showing the general public that consulting with a Doctor of Physical Therapy is a preferred option, especially when musculoskeletal pain is impacting quality of life. In just a few visits, a GOOD Physical Therapist is likely to make a significant impact on someone’s life. If people knew what they were missing out on, I think we would see more people taking advantage of Physical Therapy services.
At Elite Concepts Physical Therapy and Performance, we started this educational process with a Wine and Wellness Series, where we offer FREE Workshops on topics that relate to many of us, such as shoulder pain or low back pain. Not only do we provide a presentation on what and why these aches and pains occur, but we offer treatment strategies and home exercises that you can do. Over a glass of wine, we answer questions, and perform demonstrations to show what a treatment of our expertise might look like. We want people to feel optimistic about their condition and then know exactly how to find
